Abstract

The Indian banking sector plays a central role in financial intermediation, economic development and financial stability, making the assessment of banking performance an important area of research. This review, titled “Decoding the Balance Sheets: Key Determinants of Financial Success in Indian Banking,” examines the major factors influencing financial success through balance-sheet characteristics, profitability indicators and macroeconomic conditions. It focuses on Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE) and Net Interest Margin (NIM), along with asset quality, credit risk, capital adequacy, operational efficiency, cost management, revenue generation and financial leverage. The review also considers GDP growth, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates and major economic shocks. The literature indicates that asset quality, asset utilisation, operational efficiency and risk management are closely associated with profitability, while macroeconomic conditions influence banking outcomes. Differences across public and private banks further highlight the importance of bank-specific characteristics and an integrated approach to evaluating financial success.
