Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a game-changer in the realm of higher education teaching and learning. AI tools like intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, learning analytics, virtual assistants, automated assessment, and generative AI applications are being more widely adopted by universities to improve the quality of education and boost institutional efficiency. These technologies enable personalised learning, offer immediate feedback, enhance student engagement and assist teachers in creating effective learning plans and alleviate administrative duties. However, there are also some obstacles to implementing AI, such as issues of academic honesty, bias in algorithms, privacy of data, cyber security, digital inequality, and a lack of AI literacy among teachers and students. The purpose of this study is to explore how AI can be used to improve teaching and learning in higher education and the potential opportunities, challenges, and future directions for its use. For this purpose, a qualitative systematic literature review of published peer-reviewed studies between 2022 and 2026 was carried out in major academic databases. The results suggest that AI, if used ethically, can have a major effect on enhancing the learning experience, the retention of students, institutional decision-making, and educational access. But for the effective implementation of AI, there is a need for strong ethical oversight, faculty development, clear policies, and ongoing technological advancement. The study concludes that a human-cantered approach, in which the role of AI does not replace, but complement the role of educators, is key to a sustainable, inclusive and high-quality higher education in the digital era.
